HPLC is a seperation technique which works on principle of partition coefficient and polarity.
So, if you have a mixture of compound that has to be find its purity, you could use this technique.
HPLC elaborates High pressure liquid chromatography and a typical HPLC has its chromatographic conditions and those will help in seperation of compounds.
Main aspects of HPLC is Mobile phase (liquid) in which the compound moves and is inert to it and Stationary phase (solid) , a silica based packing column is used where the actual separation takes place by the polarity of compound and column itself.
Basically, HPLC is categorised into Reverse phase HPLC and Normal phase HPLC based on the polarity of the Mobile phase and Stationary phase.
Working mechanism of HPLC
A compound of certain concentration is prepared and injected into the flow of Mobile phase where it carries the compound to column and the compound is seperated into its individual components based on its polarity.
Now the seperated components are carried to detector where the actual identification takes place.
According to your application, you could use detector to identify.
Most commonly used detectors are PDA/UV , RI , ELSD , MASS.
